Sig Sauer P320 Review: What You Should KnowTyler Horvath
Sig Sauer did not have a striker-fired pistol until they released the SIG P320. Everyone is going for a striker-fired pistol, and I was surprised to see the Austrian arms manufacturer did not have one.
If you have used the SIG P250, you will find this handgun familiar as SIG basically created a striker-fired version of the P250.
What makes this pistol popular is the fact that the army and law enforcement has adopted its use as a sidearm.
But how good is the Sig Sauer P320? We break it down in this review:
Sig Sauer P320 Background
There are two things that make this pistol popular. One, the M17 variant of the firearm won the Modular Handgun Safety with the U.S. Military. It beat other rivals such as the Glock 19X to emerge the top gun. Every gun manufacturer wants to win that contract because it means they have passed a host of tests. I love handguns that have gone through testing by the military.
The other thing that made the pistol popular was the discovery that it would self-discharge if dropped at a specific angle. If the back or the side of the older models hit the ground at 33 degrees, the gun would discharge. This problem was a result of the weight of the trigger. It was serious that the Dallas Police Department advised all its personnel to avoid the gun.
The gun had gone through drop tests during manufacturing and design, but the drops from increased heights and specific drop angles were not considered. These non-protocol drop tests almost failed the pistol.
I say ‘almost’ because by the time the drop incident came out, SIG was already working on a trigger improvement. Before we threw out our pistols with the Dallas Police Department, SIG rolled out safer pistols with a lightweight trigger. The new pistol continues to be one of the most popular pistols.
I fell in love with the pistol when it won the U.S. Army contract. Better yet, the handgun offers so much versatility, making it an ideal choice for shooting at the range, hunting, and home defense. Its serial-numbered chassis ensures that you can connect it to any grip frame size and barrel length. Whether you have small or large hands, the gun feels comfortable on your hands.
There are different grip frame sizes that work with this chassis. The conversions are easy, and you do not need any tool to perform them.
- Type: Striker-fired autoloader
- Caliber: 9mm Luger
- Capacity: 12 – 17 rounds
- Width: 1.38 inches
- Length: 6.67 – 8.05 inches
- Barrel: 4.7, 3.86, 3.55 inches
- Unloaded Weight: 24.9 – 27.6 ounces
- Finish: Nitron
- Sights: SIGLITE for night use
- Grips: Polymer Module
- Trigger: 6.88 pounds pull
One of the features that I am sure you will like is the stainless steel chassis of the Sig P320. You can customize the size of the grip, especially the circumference of the grip. You only need to get a plastic grip frame that matches the size of your hands.
The steel fire control unit comes with a serial number, which you can use to order grip frames from online shops to your home.
With a tailored plastic grip frame, the handgun feels as comfortable on your hands as any other SIG handgun. Not only does the customized frame fit all hands, but it also feels warm no matter how cold it gets. You have to fire a few rounds to appreciate the comfort it offers.
The mag drops free when you need to reload. This has been an issue for me as my hands are huge. If you use the compact or the subcompact model of pistol, you might have the same problem. The floorplate of the magazine is a part of the grip, and if your hands have as much meat as mine, this might prevent the magazine from dropping freely.
Generally, regardless of the high-bore axis, the pistol feels comfortable on your hands.
The handgun comes with a host of features that give it an impressive design. Of all the design features, I love how easy it is to take down the gun. You do not need to pull the trigger when you take down the gun. The only thing you need to do is lock the slide back, twist the dismantling lever clockwise, and remove the upper half of the gun. Impressive design features on the gun include:
It comes with standard safety features such as a firing pin and trigger common in every SIG firearm. However, unlike any other striker-fired gun, this pistol comes with a single piece trigger. It is one lightweight trigger that pulls with ease.
Instead of a two-piece hinged trigger, the pistol comes with a single-piece trigger with a safety feature to control the striker. You do not have to do much to keep the gun safe as all the safety features are passive.
Better yet, the trigger of the Sig P320 is smooth and consistent. It is available in standard, short reach, and small bladed design.
Fire Control Unit and Caliber X-Change
The fire control unit is where the serial number of the gun is, and this is the part that forms the gun. This chassis is made of steel and its slide and grip frame have no serial numbers. This allows you to shoot different calibers by changing the mags and the slides. It also makes it easy for you to re-size the gun to your hands for a comfortable feel.
The Caliber X-Change kits from SIG are an ideal package when you need to change the size of the gun. You can change its size from full-size, compact, or subcompact, depending on the size that you shoot comfortably. There are also caliber change kits designed for .380acp, .40s&w, 9mm, and .357 Sig. You also get a slide, magazine, and grip module work with your caliber and grip size.
SIG also plans to roll out .45 ACP kits. This will help you if your pistol is in .45 ACP, and you need to have other calibers, or if your pistol is not .45 ACP, and you need a .45 ACP. However, it’s been two years since I first saw that SIG is working on the .45 ACP, so do not get your hopes up.
I love the quality of the chassis of the pistol. SIG is one of the best producers of Polymer frames for guns. Further, the pistols are also reliable, and you can use them in different environmental conditions in the wild. However, the grip frame is not as tough as you would expect, as it is disposable. This plastic part is not as tough as what other handguns such as M&Ps and Glocks offer. The handgun comes with Picatinny rails under its barrel in front of the trigger where you can mount or use a laser for added accuracy, especially at night.
Although the grip frame feels comfortable on any hand, it feels more prone to scratches, especially under rugged use. The finish, however, is the same on the SIG P250 to make the gun durable. If you need a gun that maintains its look for many years to come, the plastic grip frame of this gun ensures that you cannot enjoy that. This, however, doesn’t affect the reliability of the gun.
If you live in very cold and humid areas where guns are prone to rust, your handgun is safe as the plastic casing doesn’t rust at all. You can drop your gun in salty water and assemble it wet, and it will never have a problem with rust.
This being a sidearm for the U.S. Army and law enforcement personnel, it is designed to conceal with ease. Because you can change the size of the P320, the gun is even easier to conceal. You can choose between a full-size, compact, and sub-compact size, making the gun easier to conceal.
It can be challenging to find universal retention holsters for the pistols, especially now that there are different sizes based on the grip frame that you choose. As a guard or security officer, you can use a level 2 or level 3 drop leg holsters. There are also duty holsters if you prefer them. If you need a holster to wear with light clothes, you can use an off-shoulder holster instead of retention holsters.
If you need a gun to use in a competition, the pistol might be a great choice for you. It is highly accurate to outshoot other guns in its category. In the mag, you can use plinking and hollow point ammo. If you know how to aim and shoot, the gun has all the features to make you shoot accurately.
If you have the previous model of this pistol, the trigger blade is wide and curved. You need to get used to the trigger if you need to shoot accurately.
The trigger pull feels consistent, especially if you have to fire multiple shots. There is never stacking and the trigger pull falls between the needed 6 and 7 pounds for a striker-fired gun. For an accurate gun, the trigger pull should be consistent without feeling heavy or breaking as is common in older pistols.
The accuracy of the Sig S is further enhanced by the accurate grip panels. You will also love the comfortable width of the grip. It is easy to customize the grip by ordering a frame online that fits the dimensions of your hands.
To further enhance the accuracy of the Sig Sauer P320, SIG offers a cutout where you can mount a red dot sight. You also get a red dot sight with your handgun to get you started. Having used one, I can say that the red dot makes the gun more accurate to shoot.
How to Shoot
The comfort you get with a custom grip frame allows you to shoot accurately. You can use it when you need accuracy at the range, during competitions, or when you go out hunting. I looked at a couple of reviews online and everyone seems to be happy with how the gun functions. The trigger on the older model is heavier and even with the new model, you still need between six and seven pounds.
It feels easy to shoot is pistol given that it has low recoil. Beginners will, therefore, find it easier to use when they are training. You can use different types of ammo in your pistol, and there are also specialty loads when you need to shoot better.
It is easy to take down the gun, load ammo, change the caliber, and slide the grip frame. Most of the ammo you use will perform well.
What We Liked About This Handgun
I have shot so many rounds from the Sig Sauer P320, and there are so many things to like about it. Some of my favorite features include:
You can turn your handgun into whatever you want it to be. You can slide a grip frame of any size that fits your hands and a caliber you want to shoot. This makes the handgun comfortable and gives it a great feel on your hands so that you can shoot with ease. Although these attachments may not be as durable as the chassis, they are comfortable and allow you to shoot with ease.
The handgun has gone through different tests by the military and other bodies to ensure its safety. The trigger mechanism and other parts of the gun made it safe. Because the original model of this gun was having issues with the weight of the trigger, SIG made this new model safer. No matter the angle you drop it at, or the part that hits the ground first, the gun will not go off.
Although the Sig Sauer P320 does not have the accuracy of a sniper rifle, it allows you to shoot accurately from short and long distances. One of the things that make it accurate is its customization. The gun is accurate as users in gun forums show. In most of the gun forums I checked, the gun seems to have a special place in people’s hearts.
One Gun, Many Applications
There are different models of this handgun. The M17 is for the U.S. military and law enforcement, but that is not the only model you have. You can use any of the models for different functions, but some are suited for specific functions better than others.
The RX Carry is more versatile of the other models. This model sports a red dot sight on its slide, allowing you to shoot more accurately. Again, it is large enough to use for rugged work, but small enough for concealed carry.
The Tacops model is great for law enforcement officers and security guards. It comes with a 21 round magazines to make this a high-capacity gun. It is ideal for open carry, competitions, and shooting at the range.
What I Did Not Like About this Handgun
You Need a Custom Holster
I have always loved custom holsters for my pistols as they feel more comfortable. However, I seem to be the only one as people with many pistols need a versatile holster. Because you can alter the size of the gun, you will need to alter the size of the holster too.
The Plastic Frame is Not Durable
The plastic frame feels comfortable and has a great finish. It also makes the gun feel warm on cold days, and it is light during use. However, the gun is more susceptible to scratches and will generally last less than metallic frames do. This means you will have to replace the grip frame after a while, depending on how much you use the gun.
Pros and Cons
- Customizable for different hand sizes
- Easy to customize with different calibers and frames
- Feels comfortable on your hands with a good grip, depending on the frame you use
- Highly accurate with a red dot sight
- Verified by the U.S. military as safe and reliable
- Different models to choose from
- The customizable frame is less durable
- The trigger might get being used-to
The SIG Sauer P320 is a great firearm. If you do not like it for anything else, you will like it because it won the contract for the U.S. army. It is a modular gun, which means you can fit a different grip frame and calibers. There are different models to meet your needs and functions. If you need a pistol with great ergonomics, this one will deliver for you.
The army made a great decision when they picked this gun as it has not disappointed me any day. I recommend it for anyone who needs a versatile pistol.
